The Union Hospital Auxiliary has come a long way from conducting door-to-door campaigns asking for $1 from each household nearly 70 years ago to how it supports the hospital now.
On Monday (April 17), the all-volunteer Auxiliary presented its largest-ever annual donation of $253,147 to hospital officials, bringing its all-time donation total to Union Hospital to exactly $4 million since its organization in 1949.
“This Auxiliary is just a wonderful group of women who are hard-working and simply love the hospital,” said Susan Mosher, president of the UH Auxiliary. “Reaching the $4-million mark is a remarkable milestone, but I’ve gotten so much more from the Auxiliary than I’ve given. It’s a wonderful organization.”
Fund-raising events conducted by the Auxiliary over the course of the past year generate the amount donated annually to the hospital. The gift was made during the Auxiliary’s annual luncheon meeting attended by Auxiliary members, hospital officials and public officials in the Monarch Center at Dover.
“You all step up when challenged and get better all the time,” said Bruce James, president and CEO of Union Hospital. “You’ve provided the hospital with more than $1 million in the last five years alone – that’s fantastic. The support provided to the hospital by the Union Hospital Auxiliary is a true blessing in our community.”
Proclamations and letters of congratulations highlighting the Auxiliary’s efforts and noting the $4-million donation mark were presented during the meeting by Jennifer Kiko, field representative for the office of U.S. Rep. Bob Gibbs, and Ashley Karlen, field representative for the office of U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson. Other congratulations letters were sent to the Auxiliary by U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, State Sen. Jay Hottinger and State Rep. Al Landis.
“I see a lot of community members who really care when I look out at our members,” said Connie Finton, who chairs the annual Warther’s Christmas Tree Festival fund-raiser for the Auxiliary. “Our gift to the hospital today puts us at an amazing plateau of $4 million. How did we get here – it was from a group of people dedicated to the common cause of Union Hospital.”
Mosher also introduced chairpersons of each fund-raising committee who oversee the work of each individual project. Others honored were the People’s Choice Award winners from the annual Chocolate Love A’fair event in February and the Warther’s Christmas Tree Festival held each November.
The annual gift to the hospital was presented to James by Mosher and Lorrie Hawk, Auxiliary treasurer, along with the past presidents of the Auxiliary who were in attendance. Mosher said that the $253,147 donation has been designated for the purchase of a wide variety of patient care equipment and improvements to the hospital facility.
The Auxiliary conducts numerous fund-raising events held annually including the Chocolate Love A’fair, Tea in the Garden, Hanging Basket Sale, Rummage Sale, Warther’s Christmas Tree Festival, Poinsettia Sale and Vera Bradley Bingo, along with other projects. The Auxiliary also operates the Corner Shop gift shop located just inside the hospital’s main entrance.
